"You have a unique book here. Roma's voice gives an intimate, personal look into the creation of this beloved ski area . . . the secret is to unlock the curiosity people have about Dave McCoy."

"Your book about the legacy of Dave and Roma McCoy is one of the most meticulously researched, well-written, best pieces of literature in the history of skiing. It is informative, inspirational and nutritious for the mental, emotional and spiritual health of the reader. For  those of us graced with the gift of having known Dave and Roma, it is a heartfelt reminder of how much they gave to the world. Every person who has ever skied, ski raced, viewed or taken a hike in the Sierra Nevada, driven by the East Side of the Sierra, stopped in Mammoth Mountain for lunch or an afternoon or a lifetime, or wondered what a successful life looks like will appreciate reading this book."

"I spent a delightful afternoon reading your book about Dave and Roma. You have a wonderful, unpretentious style. In particular, you've found a readable balance that gives enough detail to make your story come alive, while not getting so filled with minutia that your story becomes boring.

"The most important thing is that you captured the spirit of Dave and Roma's relationship, as well of the spirit of the people who moved to Mammoth in this time period and helped Dave and Roma. Great job. It really is fascinating reading. It brings up memories of the times I was fortunate enough to interview Dave for the San Diego Union-Tribune. It was always such a pleasure to talk with him. As Roma says often in your chapters, Dave had a way of never seeing a problem. Rather, he saw challenges that could be solved with hard work, creativity, and passion."

"I love the way you use the third person with Dave and the first person with Roma. Knowing what I know about them, you described them flawlessly, character and personality. Your book has inspired me to think how Dave loved it when people enjoyed the adventure, the freedom and thrill that skiing could express. He wanted folks to have good, clean healthy fun, no matter what the danger, despite the moderate risk.

"I had lot's of personal memories with Dave. The last one was in the mid-ninety's.... I was by myself, in line early one morning at the bottom of Chair One when I saw him ahead of me. I shouted out, 'Hey Dave, Michael Lella here, how are you?'  He stopped his discussion with the person next to him, turned around and said 'Mike Lella?... I'll be darn...Haven't seen you in in 26 years (and he was exactly right). Are you by yourself?' I was, and he invited me to spend the rest of the day with him. At first I thought.... Man, ... Dave is in his mid-seventies and he'll probably slow me down and I'll have to wait for him all day. Instead, the second we got off Chair One and headed down towards Stump Alley, he took off full-speed.... I couldn't believe it. We went straight down to the bottom of Chair Two, he on the right of Stump Alley and me on the left. I could glance over to my right and see him smiling, glancing at me in a competitive sort of way, but really enjoying the speed. When we got to the bottom he said with a grin 'Boy Mike, it's still fun, isn't it.' It was like that the rest of the day...We bombed around everywhere.  I thought to myself, if it was anyone other than Dave, we would have been reprimanded for skiing way too fast.

"Dave truly was an extraordinary individual who  lived up to his legendary status with modesty, integrity, and kindness to all. Here's a man who built an 'empire' and yet...all he wanted in life was to pass on the simplicity and beauty of nature, and the thrill of what it can do to one’s spirit. . . . and Robin, your book describes that beautifully, like none other."

Robin Morning Bio

While growing up in Santa Monica, California, Robin ski raced for Dave McCoy and his Mammoth Team. From 1965 through 1968, she raced as a member of the U.S. National Team and was named to the 1968 U.S. Olympic Ski Team. The day before the Opening Ceremonies in Grenoble, France, she broke her leg on a downhill training run.

Robin coached junior ski racers and master’s ski racers from Southern California, Mammoth Mountain, and both Durango and Vail, Colorado, before returning to California to finish school at U.C.L.A. She then settled in Leucadia, California where she

spent fourteen years teaching school for the San Dieguito High School District and raised two boys. Robin eventually returned to Mammoth where she now resides.

In 2008, in conjunction with the Mammoth Lakes Foundation, Robin published Tracks of Passion: Eastern Sierra skiing, Dave McCoy, and  Mammoth Mountain, a 370-page coffee table book with approximately 1,000 images, essays and quotations. Her current book, For the Love of It, is a  narrative non-fiction that describes Roma and Dave McCoy's lives from their early years through 1955 when they opened Chair One.
